Island Hoops

The Philippines' love affair with basketball

Story by everything's a photo May 7th, 2014

Love affair

Basketball is huge in the Philippines. Everyone plays, and everywhere you go you can find hoops by the road and barangay (district) courts. Kids

Kids of all ages hang around the basketball courts. If they’re too young to play or are excluded from the game they will make up their own games or sit transfixed by the match!

Barangay courts are the hub of the community and aren’t just used to play basketball. The space is used for drying rice and coconut, hosting weddings and discos and parking jeepneys and trikes!
